Internet sensation DRAYE opens up to RNH Magazine & details his rap takeover plan! #MAJORKEY

.DRAYE400x400

What is your artist name?

Draye

Explain what your name means?

My name is D’Andre Jolly. I initially went by “Dre” but after a while it became clear to me that as “original” as that was, it wasnt original enough to catch people’s attention. So i added the “A” from my first name and the “Y” from my last and came up with a way to still be “Dre” in a more unique way.

What city and state are you representing? (Example, Atlanta, Georgia)

I’m from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. But in no way do I represent my city/state.

Describe your style of singing or rapping?

People say i sound like Drake, Nas, Chris Brown, and even Usher. I make beats, so whenever I hear a track I hear all the suttle “snaps” and “claps” that I could hit while singing and rapping. If the beat is smoother is some places I may choose to sing, if it speeds up I may ride the wave by rapping/singing with the same tempo or half-step it. I just try to challenge myself allthe time to not be or sound like everybody else because in my music I often card rappers a lot for jocking the “Migos Flow” 24/7. And I present that theory by doing it myself whenever I speak on it as a gag to say “Look how easy that shit is for me to copy, come harder. If you plan to say you’re nice on the mic, do something else because that shits too easy.”

Who inspired you to pursue a music career?

Really and truely I watched Chris Brown and the rest of the stars gain female attention by showcasing their takents and i wanted to do the same. So i learned how to dance, singing ran in the family, i taugh myself how to produce, and taught myself hiw to rap. But overall my grandma and my peers really inspired me a bunch. My granda supported my drive and most of my peers hated on me a bunch and still do, so when my grandma died I kicked it into high gear and decided I would prove them all wrong while I provide for my family using my God-given gifts as my way out ofy “Crabs in a bucke” syndrome-ass city/state.

What challenges did you face as a youth in pursuit of your music dream?

People always hated me for being different, i was bullied as an adolescence and had to find solace in my music because most of my family did the same. Over and over my faith has been tested when people don’t believe in me because I’m not famous yet or haven’t made a breakthrough. Most of all my moms and I argued a lot because she was the main person who didnt believe in me because I didn’t have anything (Money) to show for all my hard work over my lifetime, thats hard to go through when you can’t see your future yourself and you’re trying ti be strong but the people closest to you dont believe in your abilities or that everything you’ve worked for can be obtained. I always said I was going to be famous before I turned 21, my bday is Friday (Aug. 26th) and I got the email to do this not even a day fter my faith was tested yet again as my moms and I argued over where my career would end up because I’m not generating revenue. So yeah, ive faced a lot and i know there is much more still to come, but as long as I continue to have faith I know everything will line itself up as it has with the placement of this opportunity thats been given to me.

Describe your feelings when you’re recording music in the studio?

I’m so turned up and into the music. Im really a calm, and shy person until music comes on and I get to dancing and grooving. I just love music, all my emotions pour from my soul whenever I do a track.

What is the message behind your music?

Real, authentic sounds arent dead, everybody ain tryna sput like the Migos or Future. Also that no matter who tells you what or hiw hard it is to see yourself come out on top, gave unwavering faith and commitment to your dreams and God will always come through in the clutch for you.

What do you fear the most in this business?

I fear that once I make it I will lose my connection with my friends I have gained over the years and that the businessmen will try to “Mainstream” me and dumb down my style because i can do it like everyone else is. But i dont want to do that, im not here for that, im here to show people that there is talent, real talent in the cracks of the world where no one is looking. Ultimately I fear that my family and friends will try to use me and abuse my newly obtained status for their own selfish agendas. which would hurt me more than anything because they knew me before all that andnever saw me as a dollar sign until I gained dollar signs.

Are you excited to be featured in RNH Magazine?

Hell yeah. I’ve never been apart of anything like this, ever. Im so excited to be able to have this all happens to/for me because I’ve wanted this stuff since I was 11 (im 20 now) so its a pretty big deal even though its a “baby step” ita gets me that much closer to being signed by my idol (Wiz Khalifa). I always said that I’m not signing to anyone else, no matter the check or what they throw at me, my mind is made up that he’s going to recognize my talents the most and use me, teach me, and guide me to where i want my career to be. So if you’re asking if I’m “excited” that’d be an understatement.

How can people reach you on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook & etc?

Just follow me on Twitter (@DreFromZMG) and DM me. Do the same for Instagram. On Facebook I have a personal page thats for personal and business uses, if you just want to be my friend I’ll accept as many as I can but Im really saving that for my relationships with people in this industry when i meet up with them to exchange social media(s) with them as verification that we’ve met and have a relationship with one another. I also have an artist page, look me up as Draye, thats for fans as well as anyone who wants to contact me directly, i check it all the time just like my email. If you want to get into contact with me just reach out, I’m always down to work with anyone as long as I like your music.

Describe your style of singing or rapping?

I rap about real life events… things I go through on a daily basis. Facts.

Who inspired you to pursue a music career?

My little brother inspired me. He used to always say we have too much talent not to do something with it.

What challenges did you face as a youth in pursuit of your music dream?

I grew up in the projects… coudln’t do much because the area was bad. My parents never got along and always argued so to draw out the noise me and my little brother and sister used to rap, sing and dance. About a year ago my little brother was murdered. After that I didnt want to rap or do anything for that matter, but i know he would’ve wanted me to pursue our dreams. That’s when i started listening to beats again and writing music.

Describe your feelings when you’re recording music in the studio?

I have mixed feelings when I’m in the studio. I’m turnt and happy that I have the opportunity to record. Then I’m sad and angry because my little brother isnt with me.

What is the message behind your music?

My message is to be yourself! Dont let anyone’s judgement change or affect you. Grind hard and never stop pursuing your dreams no matter what.

What do you fear the most in this business?

I fear not having any listeners, because if no one is listening, how will i be heard?

Are you excited to be featured in RNH Magazine?

JOV opens up to RNH Magazine about music, life, & more! #MAJORKEY

.JOV

What is your artist name?

JOV

Explain what your name means?

My name is the three first letters of my name. Felt it was important since my music is not a persona, it is all about my life and thoughts. I want fans to feel a personal connection to me when they listen to my songs.

What city and state are you representing?

Charlottesville, Virginia. Lived in the town since 6th grade and was the beginning of my writing days. From poetry to rap, the city and state provided my friends, education, and memories that I cannot forget.

Describe your style of singing or rapping?

My style of rapping I would say is a balance of lyrical story telling but accompanied with catchy hooks that stick in a listeners head. All my tracks are my real voice, I felt that was important since I want them to feel as if I am in the room with them as the songs play.

Who inspired you to pursue a music career?

My friend group and inner circle that I work with on music gave me the confidence to chase my dream as we would work together all the time. Two artists that inspired me to strive were Russ and Jon Bellion. Both just focused on the music side and perfecting their craft and the industry/fans came since the music was the force that spoke and gained them popularity.

What challenges did you face as a youth in pursuit of your music dream?

Just lack of confidence when I was younger. I always feared speaking in front of people and was out of shape when I was younger. So as I grew more confident in myself, the more motivated and at peace I became with pursuing my dream and focusing on my music.

Describe your feelings when you’re recording music in the studio?

I am very focused but loose in the studio. I like to have a creative environment with music and videos playing in order for me to write and craft. Depending on my mood, I will either work alone and focus solely on my sound or be with friends bouncing off ideas with them.

What is the message behind your music?

The main message I try to spread is just the importance of living in the present and maximizing your potential. Chase after your goals because later down the road when you are older you do not want to regret trying to accomplish your goals.

What do you fear the most in this business?

My biggest fear of the business is just the changing relationships. Once people see you do music they instantly get a different image in their head and it is hard for them to step away from that thought. I want to be able to provide for my friends and family but not have it come to a point where it strains my relationships and mind state.

Are you excited to be featured in RNH Magazine?

Yes, I am ecstatic. As a local artist who just loves to create music this is a dream come true. It is a surreal feeling to be able to see yourself and hear music that I made be featured online. Honestly nothing beats the high that it provides.
