Q: Artist Name?
A: Kayla Jay
Q: Explain what your name means?
A: A play on my first and married name.
Q: What city and state are you representing?
A: Laurel Springs, NJ
Q: Describe your style of singing or rapping?
A: Mostly down-tempo Pop/R&B. My music is usually about life and relationship experiences.
Q: Who inspired you to pursue a music career?
A: Rihanna, Katy Perry, Lauryn Hill is a huge inspiration and probably the biggest influence, Tori Amos, Gwen Stephanie, and Aaliyah.
Q: What challenges did you face as a youth in pursuit of your music?
A: A lack of self confidence mostly. Money. And just not knowing how or where to start.
Q: Describe your feelings when you’re recording music in the studio?
A: When I’m recording it is fulfilling, freeing, and also stressful. I can get lost for hours working on new material. So depending on what the song is, I can get happy and really excited, or just plain bummed out at some of the darker lyrics I write.
Q: What is the message behind your music?
A: What If, reflects on overthinking one’s place in a relationship. Doubting every move you make. Wondering if committing is the right thing to do when you can’t even be sure the other person won’t hurt you, or that you won’t pull back and hurt them. I try to write songs that have meaning and not just party music. Just about every song that I write is about some life experience, particularly relationship based, that I’ve been through. Relationships are these crazy, organic things that can bring so much joy and pain. I’m not against it, it is just not for me right now. I’ve written a few songs that can be considered “party”, but they all still have deeper meaning behind them.
Q: What do you fear the most in this business?
A: I wouldn’t say that I fear anything most right now. I would say that it is hard to stay relevant, and even harder to get exposure. I guess that’s a fear. But if anything scares me the most, it is having my music stolen. I’ve seen that happen up close, and it took years for that person to win that case. I don’t expect, nor do I want to reach superstar status. But I really do want and hope that my music reaches a larger audience and that it moves them in some heartfelt way.
Q: Are you excited to be featured in RNH Magazine?
A: Yes. It’s pretty exciting! I’m not the most outgoing person, and my music is helping me be more social. It’s definitely been an awakening.
Q: How can people reach you on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook & etc?
A: I’m on Twitter and Instagram the most as TrueKaylaJay. Facebook and Youtube as Kayla Jay Music.
