Q: ARTIST NAME?
A: Will Miller & The L.A. Horns West
Q: Explain what your name means?
A: Will Miller & The L.A. Horns West was created because horns were gradually disappearing from the music scene and I want to bring horns back into the mix and to the forefront. As a professional trumpeter, composer, arranger, and songwriter, I will make sure that horns were present in my music.
Q: What city and state are you representing?
A: Los Angeles, CA
Q: Describe your style of singing or rapping?
A: My songs are centered around catchy melodies, rhythm and horns. I am not the lead vocalist on this track, just singing all backgrounds. My goal is to write compositions that allow the horns to share the spotlight with the lead vocals.
Q: Who inspired you to pursue a music career?
A: An older sister who played clarinet in the local high school band got me started. And an over-indulgent spirit to write that next meaningful popular song has kept me going.
Q: What challenges did you face as a youth in pursuit of your music?
A: Isolation growing up in a small southern town (Ft. Pierce, FL) was very limiting and being unable to afford instruments and lessons like other students from affluent families was a challenge. But I overcame it by working extra hard at developing as an instrumentalist and composer.
Q: Describe your feelings when you’re recording music in the studio?
A: I am free and in a special creative zone. With a connection of mind, body and spirit I am able to pull from the universe ideas that feed my compositions. It is a magical feeling in that moment when you are developing a melody or song for the very first time. Only things that hinder the flow are my limitations with whatever gear, application or system I am using to create or ordinary business distractions from the work day.
Q: What is the message behind your music?
A: My song ‘Win for Me Tonight’ represents my second chance to release a song I composed in 1996 before The Lakers marched on to basketball dominance with five NBA titles. With the recent acquisition of LeBron James I see the same patterns developing around the team. Everyone, including the media and fan base, smell championships. And so I decided to act this time by releasing my song, ‘Win for Me Tonight’, which sets the stage and the ball in motion for a revival on the Lakers’ march back to basketball dominance. The song embraces spirit, fun, reflection and the love of basketball from a fan’s perspective. My hope is that the song catches on and fans download my music and special Lakers ringtones (found exclusively on the website: https://www.SportsMusicFan.com)
Q: What do you fear the most in this business?
A: Becoming obsolete. The pop songs of today don’t require much talent or artistry to perform. The lack of well crafted and memorable melodies and the dumbing down need for good instrumentalists to play backing tracks have musicians worried. And as a songwriter composer, there is no strong need for melody; so why even attempt to write countermelodies? Everything done in that direction seem to make the music seem more traditional (or in industry terms “dated”). Most of the songs we hear today is a production of beats and crafty engineering. Throw in a catchy hook, some easy chordal pads and a lack-luster melody and you have a typical hit song. Singers rarely sing beyond a 4th or 5th interval these days. When we hear for example ‘Estel’ sing a melody with leaps and bounds the music business (comprised of young ears) is amazed and thinks this is totally new, awesome and the result is a Grammy award. No, this was minimal expectations for songs written and performed back in the day. I will continue to mix the traditional with the new, in hopes of striking a balance with the young and old ears.
Q: Are you excited to be featured in RNH Magazine?
A: Yes, I want this very much! People need to know that some things in life are special and you just can’t explain it. Michael Jackson, Prince, Elvis, Pavarotti, Levy Stubbs, Luther, Whitney, Aretha, Kobe, LeBron, Durant, Golden State Warriors, Brady, The Patriots and The Lakers are just a few. And I am trying to amplify that. I am embarking into a field where there is no known market for sport fans to buy sports music. www.SportsMusicFan.com is addressing that. And although I like basketball the most, I plan to write and release songs for other sports too, like our upcoming Superbowl song that is now in production. As a start-up we hope www.SportsMusicFan.com will catch on soon.
