It is with a heavy heart that we report on an incident that took place in a Houston-area high school. A history teacher reportedly used a Black student to discuss selling slaves during class. This is an absolutely unacceptable use of a student in the classroom, and it highlights the need for more sensitivity and awareness when teaching about such a sensitive topic.
The incident took place at Kahla Middle School in Houston, where the student was allegedly asked by the teacher to stand up and be “auctioned off” as part of a lesson on slavery. The student’s mother Tori Ards spoke to a local news station ABC 13, saying that her daughter was “humiliated” by the experience.
Many feel that this incident is just another example of the racism that still exists in our society. Some are calling for the teacher to be fired, while others are calling for more sensitivity training for all staff members.
It’s clear that this incident has struck a nerve with many people. The question now is how will the school district respond? Will they take action to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again?

In light of Black History Month, an incident occurred at Diablo View Middle School in Clayton, California that highlights how far we have to go to ensure our students learn about the history of African Americans and their contributions to society.
A California middle school student was disciplined for making a racist joke during Black History Month. The student, who has not been identified, put cotton balls in front of his classroom’s Black History Month display. When asked why he did it, the student said he was “making a cotton field.”
These incidents underscore the need for more dialogue about race and racism in our schools. We need to have honest conversations about the ways that racism manifests itself in our society and in our classrooms. Only then can we begin to address the problem head-on.

Nas Makes Another Smart Investment
Nas has never been one to shy away from the latest trends in investments. After unveiling his enterprise, Queensbridge Venture Partners, he invested $15 million into Lyft and $40 million in Mass Appeal Media. As of 2018, Escobar Cigars was launched by its parent company Puros Privados, which is one of the largest cigar makers. Both their headquarters and manufacturing facilities are in Estel*, Nicaragua.
