Plaintiff files wrongful prosecution lawsuit against district attorney

The district attorney who put Curtis Flowers on trial six times has been sued by the Black man wrongfully imprisoned for 23 years.

According to ABC News, Montgomery County District Attorney Doug Evans and three investigators have been named in a lawsuit filed on Friday (Sept. 3). Evans and the investigators are accused of engaging in wrongdoing, including “pressuring witnesses into fabricating statements about seeing Mr. Flowers on the day of the murders and ignoring other possible suspects,” according to the lawsuit. Amount of money sought by Flowers is not stated in the lawsuit. A jury will make that decision.

Flowers, who was convicted in the 1996 shooting deaths of four people, spent nearly half of his life on death row. Up until two weeks before the shootings at the Winona Tardy Furniture Store, he was employed there. Bertha Tardy and three of her employees, Carmen Rigby, Robert Golden, and Derrick Stewart, were shot to death in the head.

Despite no known motive and little evidence, Flowers was charged with the homicides. Several experts hinted at the possibility of more than one person being involved in the shooting, but Flowers was the only one charged. As a result, he was convicted four times: twice for all four murders and twice for the individual murders. There have also been two mistrials involving all four deaths, with every conviction getting overturned. Lynn Fitch, Mississippi’s attorney general, announced in 2020 that the state would not pursue Flowers’ seventh trial, freeing him at long last after 23 years in prison.

Previously, the state of Mississippi was ordered by a judge to pay Flowers $500,000 for wrongful imprisonment

Pop Smoke legend continues powered by FAITH

Pop Smoke legend continues powered by FAITH

In anticipation of the release of Pop Smoke’s second posthumous album, cover art has been unveiled.

Steven Victor, Pop Smoke’s manager before he tragically passed away, shared an image of his new album, FAITH, earlier this afternoon (July 12). Additionally, a trailer was included as a bonus.

Featuring a close-up of Pop’s face and a black background, his new album cover is a striking combination. Clearly visible in the image is the “Faith” tattoo on the left side of his face.

Visual clips from the album trailer depict Pop in his actual Hip-Hop element, whether he is performing live, engaging with his closet friends, or being interviewed face-to-face by Hot 97. Additionally, the album contains a snippet of a new song. A tragic end to an illustrious career marked by star power.

Pop Smoke’s Meet the Woo 2 mixtape shook up the rap world and became an instant classic via social media. It was inevitable that his rise to superstardom would be precipitated by his distinctive voice, the ability to create bangers, and a level of charisma that defines rap icons. He was fatally injured on Feb. 19, 2020, after being broken into by four intruders while he was renting a home.

The album included Lil Baby, DaBaby, Roddy Ricch, Future, and others. Shoot For The Stars album took over Hip-Hop on July 3, 2020. Following its release, the album opened at No.1 on Billboard 200 and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This album will also provide him with a new avenue for connecting with his fans. Below you can view the trailer and album cover for FAITH.

Wells Fargo has launched a Fund to aid Black businesses

Wells Fargo has launched a Fund to aid Black businesses

The Black Economic Alliance has teamed with Wells Fargo to launch a fund that aims to expedite the growth of black business owners and entrepreneurs. The project is known as the Alliance Entrepreneurs Fund or BEA fund.

This $50 million BEA fund will provide capital funding to small businesses that are founded by African Americans. Wells Fargo has also agreed to support this effort with a $20 million commitment over the course of the next five years.

Owning a business has proved to be one of the top ways to obtain generational wealth in America. However, too few African American entrepreneurs have been able to obtain the financial resources necessary to launch and sufficiently grow a business. The Black Economic Alliance powered by Wells Fargo will work to provide Black-owned businesses with the support needed to succeed, which will, in turn, result in the hiring of more Black workers and added investments into black communities and businesses.

The BEA powered by Wells Fargo will also reportedly recycle all of its returns to support the ongoing operations in black businesses.

Black businesses, in particular, have been hit hard by Covid-19. In a press conference, President Joe Biden made a statement reporting that 400,000 Black-owned businesses have shut down nationwide since the start of the pandemic.

The Black Economic Alliance powered by Wells Fargo will provide capital loans in exchange for an equity stake and will also offer straight loans to Black startups. The recipients of these loans and investments will be selected through an application process which will take place later this year. The BEA will accept applications from all eligible African American entrepreneurs.

Three banking groups fight against President Joe Biden’s $4 Billion Debt relief package for African American farmers

Three banking groups fight against President Joe Biden’s $4 Billion Debt relief package for African American farmers

In March, President Biden issues a relief package for African American farmers, but three large banking organizations have decided to fight against the package arguing that this initiative, which is helping African American farmers, may cut into profits and hurt investors.

The $4 billion debt relief package is part of President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package. This relief package was proposed to compensate for the long history of discrimination experienced by African American farmers.

Although, none of the money has reached any minority farmers. In April, the USDA was sued by white farmers who were complaining of reverse discrimination. Now three of the nation’s largest banking groups have joined in on the fight.

The banks are reportedly fighting the package because paying off the debt of these farmers early would cause banks to lose out on future interest payments. The banks have argued that the government should pay beyond the loan amounts to make up for the lost interest payments. The banks also mentioned that banks will likely be more hesitant to expand credit in the future if the loans are paid back sooner through President Joe Biden’s relief package.

The bank groups stated that if the debts are not properly paid of the USDA’s actions could seriously damage the market by creating an unreliable environment with unpredictable pricing. As a result, there would be a notable loss of capital for future lending. Although, the USDA has not shown any indication of reversing the plan. Government officials are reportedly to begin the debt relief procedure in the near future.
