For one reason or another, the pandemic has inspired many people to pursue various dreams and business ventures. Some individuals may have been laid off from their job due to Covid or, they may have suddenly been inspired to pursue their dream due to these unprecedented times.
Jamaican immigrant Shellie-Ann Kerns was one of those individuals who was inspired to return to her farming roots by creating a farm in Washington’s Middle Satsop Valley. Kerns was furloughed from her job as an aircraft dispatcher and was then inspired to pursue her goal of creating a farm. Her Instagram account documented her crowdfunding journey to build a 20-acre black lead farm.
Shellie-Ann Kerns has a successful GoFundMe account where she has made comments indicating that donations will be used for equipment around her homestead. Donations are currently being used to fund a tractor, a new well, and a commercial kitchen which will be used for teaching and making spice blends. So far, her GoFundMe account has raised over $77,000.
Shellie-Ann Kerns indicated that these donations are extremely helpful to growing her farm as donations will help to clear land for large-scale planting. Kerns is also very passionate about baking with sourdough, and she is very upfront about her desire to create a demonstration kitchen for creating spice blends and also teaching classes.
Kern’s heritage remains an important part of her journey as both of her parents have agricultural roots. Her mission also involves complex issues of food insecurity. Kerns has applied for grants that will support her produce. Her main goal is to offer SNAP, EBT, and food stamp recipients reduced rates in order to feed people in need.

The video was directed by DrewFilmedIt, and starts off with recent footage of Young Thug and Gunna paying off bonds for 30 low-level offenders at Fulton County Jail. The narrative goes on in the clip as families can b reuniting and celebrating together, which can be attributed to the Atlanta collaborators’ goodwill. Aiko shares a That 70’s Show-inspired video for her track “Tryna Smoke” from her Chilombo album, highlighting guest appearances from Big Sean and her siblings. She begins to sing on the record about the bliss that comes with smoking excellently:
If I could fly, I’m sure I’d never come down/ With all of the nonsense on the ground, I wish I was high because I can’t live my life when it’s low/ So I’m going to call the bros and tell them to “Roll up one, right now.”
I’m so high, I’m so high-ah-ah/That’s how I get by-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-
Aiko released her third album, Chilombo, last March. She also unveiled a music video for her song “A&B” from the project. Months later, she made public the album’s deluxe edition.
Jhené has integrated the art of acoustic healing into her music in order to assist listeners in overcoming adversity. “Because I’ve been studying sound healing, I wanted every track on this album to implement an actual, proven healing technique,” she explained in detail. “Not only could people vibe out to it and relate, but it could also help balance out various parts of their bodies, [make them] feel better, and make listening to the songs an experience.”
Queen Naija dropped her debut studio album missunderstood in October, featuring 18 soulful tracks and guest appearances from Toosii, Jacquees, Mulatto, Pretty Vee, Russ, Lucky Daye, Lil Durk, and Kiana Ledé. The Pat McManus, Boston, and Mike Woods-produced “Set Him Up,” for example, features an Ari Lennox guest appearance and sees the two women realizing they’re dating the same man:
“My man wears the same scent; I told him it was my favorite; he just got a new whip, G Wag’ in blue, and we made love in it until the sun came out; wait, were there letters on his plate? Does it begin with the letter L and end with the letter H? Yeah, I believe it does, kid. What are you trying to say?/
You may be perplexed; you’ve probably seen him around town; does he have a tat that says “The Realest” on his neck? Is there a mirror on the ceiling in his room? Is there an ex he used to deal with out West? If your nigga is my nigga, I’m going to kill him…/”
Ari Lennox’s new single “Set Him Up” will be her first since her collaboration with Nasty C on “Black and White,” which appeared on the Coming 2 America compilation Rhythms of Zamunda. Shea Butter Baby (Remix EP), as well as loose cuts like “BUSSIT” (which later appeared on Dreamville’s Revenge of the Dreamers III: Director’s Cut), “If You Want Me To Stay” with Anthony Ramos, “Grounded,” and “Chocolate Pomegranate,” were also released last year.
