This week saw NLE Choppa celebrate his 20th birthday. This morning (Nov. 4), he decided to gift his fans with a new single titled “Ice Spice,” which was produced by Tay Keith. The song reveals much about the Memphis native’s current situation while making a subtle reference to a certain Bronx newcomer, namely:
“Ice Spice” comes accompanied by a video directed by Evan Water Wippin, and it portrays a day in the life of Choppa through the lens of Water Wippin Evan. Aside from his work in the studio, he can be seen watching basketball games, spending time with his crew at the strip club, and much more on the show.
“ Ice Spice” is the latest release in a series of well-received music releases from the self-proclaimed Top Shotta which also includes tracks like “Slut Me Out,” “Yak Flow,” “Little Miss,” “Set Up Story Part 1,” “In The UK,” “Apart From You,” and “Do It Again” performed by 2rare. In that same timeframe, Choppa has also contributed a considerable amount of work to tracks such as those produced for DDG, OMB Peezy, and Macklemore in the same timeframe. I don’t know what this means, but his last full-length album was released back in January, containing 16 hard-hitting cuts and a number of assist contributions from G Herbo, Moneybagg Yo, Young Thug, and Polo G. Given his current output, we wouldn’t be surprised if we heard about another drop in the near future.
Within the past few weeks, TikTok has been dominated by viral trends where users recount their crazy years over a sped-up version of “Spread Thin” by Mariah The Scientist. Although the song was released back in March, the Atlanta-born singer appreciated the recent attention paid to the song enough to release its official music video yesterday (October 25). As her lyrics are played over various vlog clips of her year thus far, she has created a visual ode to the TikTok trend.
Mariah released the song along with an acknowledgement to those who had already been singing along for several weeks before it became viral. “I would like to thank my fans that were riding this stuff before TikTok!” “I created the video to reflect what your year was like based on your responses to our song,” she wrote on Twitter.
RY RY WORLD was Mariah’s last album before she passed away in 2021. Young Thug and Lil Baby both contributed to that body of work through their appearances on ten different tracks. According to the press release, the “Spread Thin” singer is currently on tour with Rod Wave in support of his “Beautiful Mind Tour.” Her most recent collaboration was with Dess Dior on her song “Stone Cold.”
It was last week that NAV released his fourth studio LP Demons Protected by Angels. This album features performances from Lil Uzi Vert, Babyface Ray, Travis Scott, Don Toliver, Lil Durk, Bryson Tiller, and more. Soon thereafter (Sept. 10), the Canadian artist dropped a new visual for “Lost Me,” in which he collaborated with RealestK on a song about a love interest that proved disloyal:
A black-and-white clip accompanying the music video for the NAV, 254Bodi, Money Musik, and HONEYWOODSIX-produced track portrays a single room in an artsy manner. NAV sits on a throne with an amount of money, and RealestK makes his appearance flanked by mannequins wearing sunglasses.
In the first week of the album’s release, Hits Daily Double estimates that Demons Protected by Angels will sell 50,000 to 55,000 equivalent album units. The number of units sold for Emergency Tsunami, released in 2020, would be higher if the figures are accurate. Emergency Tsunami debuted on the Billboard 200 at number six thanks to the sale of 42,000 units. As with Demons Protected by Angels, Emergency Tsunami showcased a variety of star power, featuring Young Thug, Gunna, Lil Baby, SahBabii, Future, and the late Lil Keed.
Earlier this week, PnB Rock dropped his new single, “Luv Me Again.” The single marked PnB Rock’s first release as an independent artist, and it was produced by D.A Got That Dope. The Philly-born singer’s new release features an airy, guitar-led beat that serves as a perfect backdrop to his love-struck lyrics:
“If you haven’t heard, I just released my very first independent single across ALL platforms!” says the artist on Instagram. Thanks to my fans and supporters, I have received such love that cannot be described in words. We’re going to the moon with this stuff, no kizzy.
As part of his SoundCloud Daze project, PnB Rock shared a 12-song tribute to the pivotal era that included features from Tennisboywill, Yung Fazo, Pasto Flocco, and Iayze. Prior to this, PnB Rock released a Christmas EP called 2 Get You Thru The Rain in December. A viral single, “HIGH,” preceded the album, which had six tracks and featured Young Thug and Lil Baby.
This is the official start of Lil Baby season. A new documentary on rapper Lil Baby, Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby, was released last week, giving viewers an insight into the star’s life and career. Lil Baby follows up recent loose singles “Frozen,” “In A Minute,” and “U-Digg” with a new track titled “Detox,” which may indicate a new studio album is coming soon.
The sophomore studio LP My Turn by Lil Baby was released two years ago, and it contained 20 songs and features from Future, 42 Dugg, Gunna, Lil Uzi Vert, Moneybagg Yo, Lil Wayne, Young Thug, and Rylo Rodriguez. Despite the project’s critical and commercial success, it failed to reach number one on the Billboard 200, despite selling 197,000 CD-equivalents during its first week. Several months later, a deluxe edition of the four-times Platinum effort arrived with seven additional songs, including the smash hit “We Paid” and Grammy-nominated “The Bigger Picture.”
As part of the Voice of the Heroes album, Lil Baby partnered with fellow hip hop frontrunner Lil Durk, who collaborated with artists such as Young Thug, Meek Mill, Future, and Rod Wave. In addition to topping the chart with 150,000 equivalent album units, The Voice of the Heroes also topped the Billboard chart, as well. Both parties received Platinum plaques for their efforts.
He has quickly established himself as one of the most sought after featured artists across a wide range of genres apart from his own work. Among the songs he has appeared on since The Voice of the Heroes hit the ground are EST Gee “5500 Degrees,” H.E.R. “Find A Way,” Meek Mill “Sharing Locations,” Drake “Girls Want Girls,” Kanye West “Hurricane,” Nardo Wick “Me Or Sum,” Ed Sheeran “2step (Remix),” Nicki Minaj “Do We Have A Problem?,” and DJ Khaled “BIG TIME.”
