Almost eight years following the news of tragic death of Trayvon Martin, he will be honored in his native city.

A resolution to name one part of Northeast 16th Avenue with his name, was approved by Miami Dade-County commissioners. By the end of this week, the roadway outside of Martin’s high school Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High will be named Trayvon Martin Avenue.

“Although borne out of tragedy, a new generation of activists was inspired by Trayvon Martin’s death, and his name and image are recognized across the world and associated with the fight for social justice,” Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan wrote in the resolution. “This board appreciates the social justice reforms spurred by his death, recognizes all that his legacy could have been and would like to honor the life and memory of Trayvon Benjamin Martin.”

It was in February 2012 that Martin was fatally shot as he was returning from a convenience store in Sanford, Florida. According to gunman George Zimmerman, he was acting in self-defense and eventually, he was acquitted.

According to the memo, Martin “was a typical teenager who enjoyed playing video games, listening to music, watching movies and talking and texting on the phone.” The 17-year-old “was also developing advanced mechanical skills and…was known to be able to build and fix dirt bikes.” According to the reports, he was planning on attending a college at either the University of Miami or Florida A&M University, wherein he planned on pursuing aviation, but his “future dreams and goals were extinguished before he had a chance to achieve them.”

It was the death of Martin that led to the Black Lives Matter hashtag and the Trayvon Martin Foundation. Eventually, the former became a full-blown social justice organization. On the other hand, the latter was founded by Martin’s parents, and it helps to “raise awareness, initiate dialogue, and engage individuals about social justice issues and reforms.”

The memo stated that the fatal shooting “elicited national conversations about race relations, racial profiling, gun rights, stand your ground laws and was a catalyst that set nationwide demands for social justice in motion.”

Barack Obama poured in congratulatory messages for LeBron James after the win in NBA championship and lauded him for his contributions for the country.

“Proud of my friend @KingJames for his fourth title, fourth Finals MVP, and for not only living up to the hype after seventeen seasons, but surpassing it as an extraordinary leader both on the court and in the public arena fighting for education, social justice, and our democracy,” said the former president.

In the Game 6 of NBA finals, the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Miami Heat 106-93, to end the series, making it the 17th NBA title for the team. After they won, the former president took to Twitter to congratulate the Lakers and the Seattle Storm — who were the winners of the WNBA Championship last Tuesday (Oct. 6).

“Congrats to the @Lakers and @Seattlestorm on their championship wins!” he tweeted. “Proud of all the NBA and WNBA teams and players who’ve been using their platforms to take a stand for racial justice and encourage civic participation this season.”

Both on the field and off, James has been a great leader and in the latter, he has been actively working in areas related education and social justice. In Akon, Ohio, he established the I PROMISE School, about two years ago and the students have been performing well. More than 90% of the students performed beyond expectations in math and reading.

The More Than a Vote initiative was also launched by James, to push for voter registration and to focus on the issue of voter suppression. Moreover, his recent initiative called “We Got Next” campaign recruited 10,000 poll workers to work in Black electoral districts before the election.

He has been speaking against police brutality and systemic racism as well. After the police shooting of Jacob Blake, he and several other players partook in the boycott of their playoff games to be vocal about this shooting as well as several others that have taken place.

“We see it over, and over, and over. If you watch the video, there was multiple moments where they could have tackled him,” James said, referring to the Blake shooting. “They could’ve grabbed him. They could have done that. Why does it always have to get to a point where we see the guns firing? And his family’s there; the kids are there. It’s in broad daylight.”

Rotimi wants “UNITY” in new song

“I wrote this song out of love. I don’t want to sit back and just watch, I want to act,” writes Rotimi about his newest single. With the objective of uniting people in these difficult times, a video for his powerful track “UNITY” was released. In this song, Rotimi sings about the need for unification amid the troubling times and the good times:

“Whole world at a stand still. We’re fighting for justice. No need for division, no, we all got a purpose. I cry for the mothers, I cry for my brothers. Gone too soon over difference of colors. Why does race even matter? We all in the same lane, so let’s talk about unity.”

This song is a part of  EMPIRE Presents: Voices For Change, which is a compilation album that EMPIRE dedicated to help listeners become empowered, which was released in September. The 21-track conceptual project features music from Lloyd, Mozzy, PJ Morton, D Smoke, Rotimi, Rexx Life Raj, Audio Push, Sammie, Jackboy, and many more. Several topics such as police brutality, unity, empowerment, and everything in between were explored in the album. It is important to note that the proceeds from the project and singles will be donated to the ACLU.

Earlier, Rotimi had spoken about how his approach towards his music evolved with time:

“Well, I don’t have to sneak into studios anymore. That’s No. 1. But you know, when you’re putting in 10,000 hours, you get to a place where you’re still a student, but also a master of your class. The Resume did super well for me when I was in Chicago because it gave me a lot of confidence to keep doing what I’m doing now. Now, the world is my platform.”

A Black man’s suicide has been ruled as death by suicide by the Orlando Police Department and Medical Examiner’s Office, but however, his family is not convinced.  ruled a Black man’s hanging death a suicide, but his family is unconvinced. Sharhonda James stated that foul play was an issue in the passing of her 22-year-old son Nevan Baker.

“I’m not done with this situation; it’s just beginning,” James told the outlet. “Nobody’s going to stand for this in this community.”

Last Sunday, Baker was found hanging from a tree in Barker Park. According to first responders, they performed measures to save his life upon arriving at the scene, but they couldn’t save him. On Friday, Autumn Jones- the spokesperson of the police department- announced their “investigation has concluded with the determination of a suicide.”

However, both the family and the community have raised concerns about the circumstances of the death of Baker and it was widely scrutinized. According to James stated that there were several injuries on her son’s body, such as nose swelling as well as bumps on his forehead and what appeared to be a misaligned jaw.

Another woman, who claimed to be cousin of Baker stated that he was “beaten beyond recognition.” It is reported that James requested for photos from the police department from the scene of her son’s death, but did not receive them.

“We’re not going to let this go; the community is not going to let this go,” she said.

Orlando Police Department spokesperson Jones has claimed there were “absolutely no [other] injuries to [Baker’s] body.”

“Officers have exhausted all leads and, at this time, there is no evidence of foul play or any kind of physical struggle,” the department wrote in a statement. “This is a tragic case of suicide… We are keeping the victim, his family and friends in our thoughts during this difficult time.”

Several activists have called for an extensive probe and began to float the #JusticeForNevan hashtag on social media. Don Lawrie — a local organizer- spoke about the findings of the department following several other cases of Black men dying by hanging.

“This is something that’s happening all across the United States; this isn’t just a rare incident in Orlando,” Lawrie told the outlet. “All these Black people are being found hung in a park… It’s very, very suspicious that this is happening.”

Since then, a GoFundMe campaign was set up by Baker’s sister, Jamia Douglas, to raise donations for his funeral costs. On the page, she wrote that he was “a good kid with aspirations of becoming an electrician” and that his tragic death has left her family with “many unanswered questions.”

“My son didn’t hang himself,” Baker’s mother told the Sentinel. “I know my child.”
