Racist 911 calls now a crime in California

On Monday, lawmakers in California passed a bill that criminalizes calling 911 in what would be deemed discriminatory in nature. Now, the legislation will move to the office of Gov. Gavin Newsom.

It is also a crime to wrongly accuse individuals. However, this particular legislation criminalizes hate crime in case the false accusations are posed due to an individual’s race, sex or religion.

“The bill would additionally make a false report that is a hate crime punishable as a misdemeanor or a felony if it is committed for the purpose of intimidating or interfering with that other person’s free exercise or enjoyment of their rights,” the bill states.

“The current punishment for making a false police report does not address the growing number of cases of peace officers being summoned to violate the rights of, for example, Black and Brown individuals for doing day-to-day activities—essentially living their lives,” the legislation states.

Just two years ago, Oakland, California witnessed a viral incident wherein a white woman called the police to report a group of Black people for making use of a charcoal grill in a local park. The entire country expressed outrage about the individual and she became popular as “BBQ Becky”.

“You can make jokes about it. But it’s not a laughing matter. An individual could lose their life in the wrong situation,” Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer said. “I was watching more and more people being adversely affected by it as this [Trump] administration gave license for someone who was bigoted to target Blacks and Latinos.”
The bill states that “it is up to the Legislature to help end the use of peace officers as a personal force for people who harbor racial animus—it is a waste of time and resources to have the police deployed when criminal activity is not occurring.”

In case a person is convicted under this law, they may be imposed fines of up to $10,000 and jail time.

NFL to paint “end racism” and more in end zones

Social justice messages will be painted by NFL in end zones prior to their upcoming 2020 season. Reportedly, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed that ideas such as “End racism” and “It takes all of us” will be painted on the fields.

Breer took to Twitter to write “NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says on a call that the phrases ‘End Racism’ and ‘It Takes All Of Us’ will appear in the end zones this year.”
“The NFL stands with the Black community, the players, clubs and fans confronting systemic racism,” Goodell said during the call, per NBC Sport’s ProFootballTalk. “We will not relent in our work.”

This comes after the NBA and WNBA’s decision to paint “Black Lives Matter” on basketball courts. The leagues have also permitted players to don social justice messages, and in WNBA, players wore jerseys with the names of those who were victims of police brutality.

Just last week, basketball, hockey and tennis players either boycotted or temporarily halted their games in order to protest the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Although the NFL season will not begin until Sept. 10, MVP Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens issued a statement wherein they expressed that they were proponents of the protests and police reform.

“With yet another example of racial discrimination with the shooting of Jacob Blake, and the unlawful abuse of peaceful protestors, we MUST unify as a society,” the statement read. “It is imperative that all people — regardless of race, religion, creed or belief — come together to say ‘Enough is enough!’”

Moreover, the statement also elaborately discussed the demands, including the arrests of the officers involved in both Blake and Breonna Taylor’s shootings; a Senate vote for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020; criminal justice reform and more.

“We will use our general platform to drive change now,” the team added. “Not just for our generation, but for the generations that follow, for our sons and daughters and for their children.”

New Capital Prep school to be opened by Diddy in The Bronx

New Capital Prep school to be opened by Diddy in The Bronx

The chairman of REVOLT Media & TV, Sean “Diddy” Combs announced his plans to open up a new college prep school in The Bronx.

The plan is to open Capital Prep Bronx on Sep. 8, and for now, the method of teaching will be limited to remote tools, due to Coronavirus. During the first year of the school, almost 200 underserved sixth and seventh grade students will attend the lectures. In the next few years, the school is optimistic of teaching 650 students, from grades six through eleven.

“My dream has always been to provide children, in communities like the Bronx, the high quality education they deserve,” said Diddy in a statement. “We’re not just teaching reading, math and coding. We are grooming future leaders that will change their communities and the world.”

Previously, two other prep schools were opened by Diddy and Dr. Steve Perry; which are located in Harlem, New York and Bridgeport, Connecticut.

“We couldn’t be more excited to open our next school together in Co-Op City, a community rooted in social justice and diversity.” Dr. Perry said in a statement. “While opening up remote at first is bittersweet, we have developed a best in class approach to online learning we are excited to implement with our new families. The Capital Prep college prep model is perfectly poised to transition into the digital space and we are excited to deliver a rigorous education to this inaugural class of scholars.”

Two years ago, Diddy- a longtime education advocate- pledged to donate $1 million towards the Bronx location. Stating that he knows the environment in which the kids lived, he expressed that he wanted to offer them a quality education.

“I understand the importance of access to a great education, and the critical role it plays in a child’s future,” he previously said. “Our school provides historically disadvantaged students with the college and career skills needed to become responsible and engaged citizens for social justice.”

Kansas City girl reportedly beat unconscious in alleged racist attack

According to reports, an 11-year-old Kansas City girl was brutally attacked by a 12-year-old boy.

A young boy began to use racial slurs against the victim, Nevaeh Thomas, who was playing with her friends near an apartment complex in Shawnee, Kansas on Friday night. Instead of being bogged down, she responded saying, “My Black is beautiful.” However, that led to a brutal assault.

The boy is reported to have used a pole to beat Thomas until she became unconscious.

“She suffered from a concussion. She has stitches inside and outside of her cheek. She lost her tooth,” Thomas’ mother Brandi Stewart said. “Her feelings are more hurt because of the act of, the racial act. Not so much of the scaring.”

The members of the community are now worried about the area’s safety following the attack which, according to Stewart, was a racist act.

“Hate speech has become the norm. Violence has become the norm. It’s seeped into our children,” Empowerment Temple pastor Terry Bradshaw said. The owner of a daycare center close to the complex was horrified by the news of Thomas being attacked. “That poor little girl didn’t do anything and now she is hospitalized and beaten for what? Because she’s Black?” she asked.

Another resident of the apartment complex, Serena Mabin, also expressed concerns about the neighborhood’s safety.

“It’s kind of concerning because I have children that are different races” she said. “My son is a Black boy and you never know what’s going to happen.”

After the attack, family attorney LaRhonna Lassiter Saunder asked people to demonstrate compassion for Thomas. “How about showing a little empathy,” she said. “Regardless of the race of these kids, as a parent, if my child was injured in this manor, I’m not sure how I would handle this.”

Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe, reported that the 12-year-old boy is going to be charged with aggravated battery, a felony. Further charges may be added later.

September 18 will see Joyner Lucas’ latest EP Evolution, which was first announced last month, on his 32nd birthday. Almost right after audiences saw Lucas freestyling over Jack Harlow’s “WHATS POPPIN,” his new single called “Fall Slowly’s” new visual was released, wherein he can be seen in a passionate-yet-toxic relationship:

“I love you more than I love myself, if you weren’t with me I couldn’t picture you with someone else, and every time we separate it’s like we under spells, ’cause when we hurt each other we come back to help each other heal/

The visual was directed by Ben Proulx and aligns with the lyrics, wherein Ashanti is featured as the love interest of Lucas. It seems so real that audiences are expecting them to make an official announcement. The video showcases their physical and mental relationship beautifully, along with the bad days wherein the couple fights and Lucas getting arrested by the end of an argument.

Evolution comes after Lucas’ debut studio LP ADHD, which saw the light of the day five months ago, and featured 18 tracks. Other stars such as Logic, Young Thug, Chris Brown, Timbaland, Fabolous, and more appeared in the album. Several other singles were released from the album last year including “I Love,” “Devil’s Work,” “ISIS,” “Lotto,” and the Will Smith tribute “Will.” Later, a remix to “Will” was released wherein the legendary Philly rapper himself appeared.
